The organization which is now popularly known as the A&F now was initially founded in 1892 in Manhattan by David T. Abercrombie and Ezra H. Fitch. Initially, the famous A&F brand was known for its elite class sport wear and apparels. It was earlier the choice and the favorites of the elite class. The expensive sporting equipments like fishing rods and short guns restricted the brand to be the choice of the elite class only.

During the year 1976, the company Abercrombie & Fitch filed a bankruptcy case. Hence, it was further separated from the Manhattan store the very next year, that is, 1977. This was the phase wherein the company faced many changes and underwent modification to build itself to what it is now. During the year 1978-79, the Oshman's sporting goods relaunched the organization to turn it into a novelty and hunting items specialist. Various branches were also opened in different parts of America. In 1988 Oshman sold the company to a private limited firm.
